PRESSISION: VISIT

Roxxie had arranged a visit to  Pressision to look into what they do. I thought this visit would be really beneficial considering my personal branding and projects for the future to see what they could offer.

Notes

- Spink and Thackray: book binders in Headingley
- They use liquid based inks which means that they can digitally print in white ink!!
- Underpinned printing in white highlights the colours printed on top of stock to make them stand out more.
- Perfect bound folded with perforation to make folds pristine.
- Foil block machines used at 136 degrees for foiling. Their oldest machine is from the 1950s.
- Personalised printing is available there.
- Can perfect bind an 8 page book. 1mm minimum spine - 60mm maximum

Overview

The visit to Pressision really useful as we got to learn a lot details about the different ways to print and what is required for certain pieces of artwork. The staff where really friendly and informative and I will look into getting some of my work printed their in the future.

PPP: SHEFFIELD FINE ART EXHIBITION

During my time in Sheffield, I visited a friend called Bhav who is a fine art student at the institute of arts to look at an exhibition he had been apart of. I have an avid interest in art and culture and wanted to gain an insight into what the students did and the work he produced. Aside from visiting the exhibition we also had a little tour of the university and got to see how the fine art students produced their work.

Overview

Engaging in other areas of design is something I really enjoy doing, as it's a break from graphic designs and allows me to expand my knowledge and understanding of this field. Also was an array of really interesting and conceptual pieces.

PETER & PAUL: END OF YEAR SHOW VISIT + FEEDBACK

Today myself, Bobby, Tristan and Rinesh visited Sheffield to meet with Lee from Peter & Paul, to get some feedback on our end of year show idea to develop for the final pitch for senior management. Being shortlisted and invited to the studio was an amazing feeling and I was excited to see what the studio would be like as I love the work they do and have engaged in all the briefs they have given.

The  Peter & Paul studio is located in a building called Sum Studios that has a range of other creative and design agencies inside. What use to be an old school had now been transformed into a hub for creatives and was a alternative and nice setting.

The whole building was designed with typographic posters and the alphabetised to certain studio's inside, similar to the M one in Manchester but more colourful and photographic.

The studio had a amazing relaxed vibe and the decor was on point!

Feedback

After admiring the studio, we then had a sit down meeting to discuss what our pitch was, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses. Lee created a digital presentation to show us what step we should go in and how to expand our ideas further for the pitch.

The format of a presentation was really useful in us seeing what we could push it further. I will take on this technique when pitching ideas to clients as it's a effective and professional format.

Highlights
from this meeting
  • 'breaking the mould' is a debatable name, it leave rooms for major criticism.
  • go with the idea of breaking more literally, with plaster or other materials.
  • 4 days to complete these outcomes excluding the weekend.

Overview

This visit and feedback session was really beneficial to the development of the project and also my professional practice. Being in an industry environment and discussing ideas was not only effective but was an engaging process in allowing me to communicate in a professional manner. I really loved the studio and would like the opportunity to work there in the future and could be possible if we win the pitch or if i stay in contact with the studio. Overall today was a success and was nice to see another creative city aside from Leeds and Manchester!

PPP: BARCELONA AS A CITY

The trip to Barcelona is something I have wanted to do for a while as the culture and design within this city is something that influences me as a designer. From our previous PPP task 'Lifes a Pitch' and researching into this city it made me want to go even more.

During the trip I was able to take in the cities culture through it's architecture, museums, galleries and a studio visit that have expanded my view on design culture in a range of fields and gave me some invaluable skills not only for design, but how to work in another city and interact with people from different areas.

Overall this trip was a huge success and after graduation I hope to visit more countries to gain a bigger understanding on design, culture and to create more contacts.

For the rest of my PPP module I will now focus on visiting and obtaining a local placement and gaining more skills and awareness for myself as a designer.

BARCELONA GALLERY: VISITS

Today we visited some galleries in Barcelona that displayed different artworks, these galleries varied in styles and genres. Below ares some images of the galleries unfortunately no images could be taken inside some of the gallery due to the respect of the artists.

Art Nou Mil-lenni

La Galeria

Subarna

Galeria d'Art.

MirĂ³ / Calder Exhibition

The gallery street in Barcelona was amazing, as it is full of design culture and was really inspiring to see everything on that street immersed into it. It's somewhere I would definitely recommend designers to visit has a given me a broader insight into curation, space and gallery design, which is a field I am interesting in.
