For our first lecture we explored the question, 'what is graphic design now?' the lecture showed different genres of graphic design and what there trying to communicate and their purposes. Here are some notes I collated during the session.
- Synthesis: The combination of ideas to form a theory or system
- Popular, transient, expandable, low cost, mass produced, young, big business witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, pop culture
- Design is about solving problems
- A brief proposes a problem and as a designer we have to solve it through communication - INVOLVES AN AUDIENCE
- World of design and creative industry
- Communicating an idea/concept
- Corporate vs independent
- Extensive -branding, packaging, retail
- Making the mundane interesting and innovative
- Form - format - function - context
- Graphic design is : commercial, creative, ethical, independent
- Who, what, what, how: designing for?
- The effective delivery of a message idea or concept through the investigation of type and image
- Global branding
- Culture dominates all parts of society
- Type is complex, purest form of illustration
