From our last lecture we continued to explore what graphic design was in our second one. The lecture explored the reasons behind graphic design, it's purposes and what is takes to make it clear and successful We also looked at ways graphic design can be used beyond the generic media and materials. These are the notes I collated during the session
- There is no right or wrong but there has to be clarity to a design
- Effective delivery of a message, idea or concept through type and image
- The computer is a just a tool don't let it dictate your design
- Multimedia - Hand drawn - Digital
- Print and screen based delivery
- Hand drawn approach and how it can work on screen
- "Language is a virus, money is a nasty disease"
- Graphic designers have opinions, shape your design
- Effective and creative = has to be understood
- It defines how we see ourselves
- Spacial scale, off the printed pay, how to interact with it in the real world
- Real scale and context of work and the impact it has on the design and audience
- Ranges of media not just print
- A process of representation
- Laid out, typographic language "Yorkshire park design has gone through the hands of a graphic designer"
- Commercial vs. Non
- Spacial graphics and products
- Drawing and digital skills applied to different products and materials "sole print shoes"
- YOUR PRACTICE : about what you enjoy
- Appropriate, creative, obsessive, frustrating, organised, structured design lines in the detail
- You can never do enough
- Practice, development and discipline
- Go above and beyond
- Reflection on problems
- Techniques of printing
- What you want to achieve and time keeping
- Choosing the right colour
- Historical, contextual and cultural
- Road sign is the purest form of design
- Reducing design to the bare essentials
- Consider weather type is necessary
- What does graphic design mean to you?
- It's all about opinions
For our studio task today we had to present our printed 5 criteria of design and the examples we found.
Then we had to identify their
- Function : What is it doing? "the purpose for which something is designed or exists"
- Design context : What audience/ format?
- Tone of voice : What is the purpose / audience / representation?
- Message/idea/concept : What is it trying to represent?
- Intended scale : How is it presented /where?
Function: Poster
Design Context: Illustration of well known women with a modern hipster twist.
Tone of voice: Entertain, light hearted, humorous, creative
Message/idea/concept: To recreate strong figures and to see them in a relatable light in today's society for a younger audience.
Intended scale: A3 poster, small published book or framed art work.
Function: Poster
Design Context:
Tone of voice: I didn't know the content of the poster but by judging by the typography it looks light hearted, artistic and clear
Message/idea/concept: Creates waves with the font, structural
Intended scale: A3-A2 poster to be hung in an exhibition or shop window
Function: Retro poster
Design Context: Campaign for equal rights
Tone of voice: Political and powerful
Message/idea/concept: To send a message of peace, black rights, keeping a retro vibe for the time era that racism was at it's peak
Intended scale: Small posters- stickers fly posted on walls and billboards (Shepard Fairy was famous for doing this to create controversy and awareness about issues)
Function: Art poster
Design Context:
Tone of voice: Political men vs. women
Message/idea/concept: Optical illusion with the use of monochromatic colours
Intended scale: A3-A2 poster
Function: Art canvas
Design Context: Painting for gallery or home
Tone of voice: Challenging and unique
Message/idea/concept: Shapes, textures and materials exploited in different ways
Intended scale: A3 square canvas
After doing this task as class we found the task quite difficult as some of the material we selected infact isnt graphic design and not everything is going to have a clear tone of voice, purpose or context. However they don't all have to fit into the above sections to be graphic design. Doing this task showed me how we can be inspired by multiple types of media and art although there may not be direct clarity on what message it is trying to give us.
As a group we then presented all the images we had found and had to find all the possible functions and contexts that our work displayed.
Functions we found
- Publishing
- Branding
- Typography
- Advertisement
- Campaign
- Audience interaction
- Aesthetic quality
Contexts we found
- Books
- Film posters
- Magazines
- Newspaper
- Gallery
- Events posters
- Logos
- Ambient media
- Packaging
- Collage
This enabled us a starting point for finding graphic design meanings and purposes for an audience.
