IT'S UP TO YOU

Brief: Design, develop and produce an information pack that effectivey communicates or promotes you as an individual, designer and learner. You will need to reflect on the first year of the programe and aim to communicate what you have learned, the skills you have developed and how you see yourself applying them in the future. You should  also aim to communicate the context of your interest by referencing specific designers, studios, principles and audiences where necessary.

You should use this brief as an opportunity to explore, develop and demonstrate content, processes and areas of design that interets you at this point in time and may indicate your emerging creative concerns in Graphic Design.

To start of this project I reviewed what I looked at on my PPP blog, my personal interests as a designer and individual and my educational background to pin point what I could incorporate into my designs.

I found that I really liked to use a lot of bold and bright colours, geometric patterns, textures and type. So when looking at primary research I will focus on these styles.

I also reflected back to the free ad brief we had were we could give ourselfs our own graphic design name. I decided to use the same name 'J'nae Fox' for this brief as I think it represents who I am as an individual and has been a nickname.

RESEARCH -
PROMOTIONAL PACKS - To being my research I firstly looked at promotional packs that were aesthetically colourful to see what they consisted of and what I could potentially put in mine.

From looking at the promo packs the main thing that synthesised the design was the logo used that was repeated throughout the pack. I then researched into different logo designs.

I really liked the use of type and image in this logo which creates an interesting texture and adds depth to the text.

I like how the shapes in the design that spell out the designers name and the bold colour choice which is something I would consider.

I like the simplicity of the type and the juxtaposing bright background that emphasises the text.

The colours within this design are very vibrant and I like the placing of certain colours as it shades the corners making the type look bold and 3D.

I like the style of this logo, the bold colour against the black background makes the type stand out and is readable. I also like the placement of the geometric shapes which makes it look modern.

Looking at this secondary research then influenced me to create another brain storm of what I wanted to include  in my pack.

This then allowed me to research again into more specific things.

BUSSINESS CARDS - A signifying item for self promotion as a creative is a business card. I began researching into different style and possibilities that I liked and reflected my style.

PRODUCTION.

LOGO IDEA'S -

To start of the production of my logo I drew up a variation of thumbnails to replicate my graphic design name from image to type and image.

I then selected this small icon from my thumbnails and started developing it digitally.

I experimented with different weights but felt that the design lacked visual interest.

I then experimented with another icon from my thumbnails but I thought it could be developed further.

I looked for some secondary research and came across some logo's that used a fox.

I found this sculpture and thought it would make a good logo and designed something similar.

FONT - For my font choice I wanted something that geometric that would synthesise with the fox logo. I began looking at fonts that experimented with shape and weight until I found one that I thought was suitable.

I also wanted a font the would be legible for the body copy in my publication I looked at variation of fonts but chose blanch as it's one of my favourite fonts.

BUSINESS CARD IDEAS - I then started to experiment with some business card idea's choosing bold bright colours, and textures as these are things I like to incorporate into my work.

I started off with Fushia and back because I  think these two colours combined work well aesthetically and really stand out. but on reflection I think they looked quite unprofessional and too girly which doesnt really fit my personality.

I then look back at some of the secondary research I did on business cards and really liked the 'montreaux cafe' design that used teal and gold. I experimented with these colours and thought about incorporating a foiling method but again I felt the colours didn't stand out enough and didn't go with who I am as a person. Also the readability on the text on the cards was quite hard to identify.

I then went on to trying a simpler approach but again I felt the teal colour look really drained against the white background.

I then opted for a simple black and white just to get the alignment of my text in place and to make sure it was all readable. I felt that there was too much text on the back of business card and that the refference to my last name 's' didn't look right aesthetically.

I then started to experiment with different fonts that I felt went with the front part of the logo and liked the last design for my final. However I still felt that it lacked colour which is something I am fond of.

I then reversed the design and it really stood out which I though was an improvement from my previous idea's.

I then reflected back on my notes of what I like a designer and then decided to chose a gold colour which I would then go on to foil to get the full effect.

I then looked back at one of favourite designers Kate Moross and her business cards and I really liked how she made a collection of buiness cards that worked together harmoniously.

I really liked this concept and decided to create an additional 4 extra designs with bold colours to go along side them.

POSTER IDEAS - For my poster I wanted to create an A5 poster that would slot nicely inside of the box.

I started to experiment with textures that I had created by hand in my AS Level and incorporating them into my logo on Photoshop.

However when the design was completed I felt like it wasn't synthesised with the rest of my designs so I reavulted my approach.

I then decided to use the same design as my business card and packaging.

I chose this design as it was simplistic and flowed consistently with the rest of my designs.

However I decided to continue to experiment after I created the pattern for my packaging and came up with design that I also liked.

Back

I thought that I could also incorporate this as a double sided flyer design that spoke about me as a designer. It also would go in sync with my interest of designing for music as flyers are a prominent thing used in the promotion of events.

PUBLICATION IDEAS -

COVER -

I used the same design again also to keep up the consistency.

PAGES -

I then reviewed the secondary research I did on layouts and drew up some thumbnails.

I was unsure on which concept I liked best, so I experimented with a few designs first.

I felt that these few designs were inconsistent and the readability wasn't very good, so I decied to strip back my idea's and take a simpler approach.

I liked this design and then I started writing up my body copy but when I transferred it to the document it filled up both spreads. Also because I had the fox logo on the front I thought it would look too much on the front also.

I then chose this as my final design, I designed it the style of a cv but so it was in sync with the rest of my designs.

PACKAGING - The concept for my packaging was to create a box that looked professional and sleek on the front but inside would be bright and colourful to represent my professional and experimental side.

I looked at this book and decide upon these 3 style of packaginig design.

This design I felt would have been a bit to wide and not deep enough to fit in all my content

I thought this design would be perfect as it was a geometric cube which fit into the theme of my logo and was deep enough to fit my content into.

I then uploaded the net for the box that was supplied in the book and began designing it to match the first business card I designed.

I designed the package on idesign and expanded the pdf so I could manipulate the colour.

I then added my logo so it would be aligned perfectly with the front of the box judgeing by the scoring lines.

I then changes the box to a matt black and added my name and specialities to complete the design.

Next I moved onto the inside of the box design. Looking at the designs I researched I really wanted to incorporate a triangle design but that was very colourful.

Firstly I created a zig zag pattern and made sure it ran across my A2 page.

I then filled in the spaces and with 2 small triangles for justaposing collours.

I then continued this process experimenting with similar colours in both pastel and full.

When I filled the page I then started experimenting with a different colour zig zag pattern but in the end I prefered the black colour.

I then came up with this as my final design, I really liked how it turned out and would like to continue experimenting with things like this in future projects.

PRINTING + MAKING

After completing all of my designs I then printed them at vernon street.

There was a few printing difficulties at this campus due to my designs being black it didn't give the full colour that some of my designs initial have on my business cards. I overcame this buy printing them at the Blenhiem campus on paper and then sticking them to white card. Although they didn't come out the way I initially intended I was overall pleased with how they came out.
