PPP: LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE PLACEMENT

At the end of level 5 I had secured a graphic design role, working at an independent lifestyle magazine called Fibre. The job came about after getting some experience with the creative directors at another magazine where I created some concepts for their summer issue which was used and published. The director was creating another magazine and liked my work so they wanted me to be on board on their new project.

However as the months were going by the magazines progression was not coming along and there was nothing that I was doing in my role. Also this was an unpaid placement which John had mentioned was not really ethical in one of our talks and suggested I should keep my options open.

Later on in the months. one of the magazine editors had decided to not work with the magazine and the creative director who I had made contact with in the first place due to lack of commitment. I was asked me to move over with the editer to create another new magazine. On reflection I felt that this was pretty much a waste of my time and decided to part ways with both creatives and gear towards something more organised.

I think that this was a really beneficial learning curve for me as a designer because there are going to be possible jobs or opportunities out there that are not always going to pull through. So what I have learnt from this is —

1. To always keep my options open.
2. Do my research on any company / person and ensure that they are reputable.
3. Don't do unpaid placements!

Despite this, I have not let this situation dishearten me. In my last PPP presentation I did mention that I wanted to keep my options open and that I was in contact with the director at PIN studios which is reputable agency that creates work that inspires me and I will focus on keeping that contact and arranging a potential visit.
