TDR: WORKSHOP

For one of the briefs set by TDR, the objective is to create something that Ian Anderson would 'Cherish Forever'.

Brief 01


'give me something i'll want to keep forever.

tip — remember this is primarily a design communication design thinking workshop.

ok

researching me to make informed decisions
lateral thinking — what is it that I (ME) would / could cherish forever

if it's made / realised then all the better.
if it needs explaining, then you should find a way to explain it in the context of the piece rather than as a note attached to it as an excuse for not putting that thinking into the work.'

With the brief established I then decided to think about things that I would myself personally.




After Identifying this I the decided to research further into Ian Anderson personally to get an idea of what he would appreciate, looking at his artwork and interviews.

From the interviews and the brainstorm I created I found that he had a history in designing for music and also found some of his favourite bands. With this connection between my personal practice and what he liked I decided to create a music gig poster.

I chose Cabaret Voltaire because I really liked the artwork they had used in their designs and obviously because he was a fan of theirs. I didn't want to design something that was like things he has produced because I didn't think that it would meet the brief.







With this in mind I decided to incorporate the bands artwork, his colour scheme from his website and the dates they performed in Sheffield to make it more personal to him. Below are some variations I came up with while developing the design incorporating my own style also.




 


 





From all of my designs I refined my ideas to this piece, I chose this design because it was the most refined and had all the elements I think necessary for the design.




I sent Ian an email of the work and hopefully I will get to go to the workshop.






Although it seemed hard at first, I thought that this brief was really interesting in trying to interpret someones interests even though I have never met or spoke to them before. Although it was challenging I found some common ground between myself and the designer and used this to my advantage for my design. I am really pleased with my final outcome and wouldn't like to know his thoughts on what I created. Also this is another small brief finished and was beneficial in boosting my creativity for other projects.




After being selected to do the workshop, I was really happy to be invited along to work with Ian and to see what challenge he had for us.


Brief 02

Make something pointless for an hour, document it and present it. A learning opportunity workshop. Key thing it to show how pointless you task was. 

Presentation

Clear, concise, thinking what you present should be as good as what your making. 
What you present should be as good as what your making.
Think outside the box.
Know your enemy — the client
Tell a story and developing some narrative.
Always ask yourself why?!
What does the client really want
Creating trust with client.

Challenging ideas, 5 minuets long

2. Pointless
3. Presentation

Most important if you can't present your work theres no point, It increases its importance. This is what it does and how it got there. People are not always going to wait for the punchline

Overview


Unfortunately during the session and for the past few days I had shingles, although I wanted to do the brief, I felt really ill and couldn't continue with the next few sessions. With missing the session I felt that I couldn't continue working on this workshop and was disappointed, also I chose to discontinue this workshop due to the amount of other work I had to do in regards to my dissertation. Although it wasn't the outcome i'd hoped, I am happy that I was selected for the workshop and had a little time to sit and talk with Ian.
