For our PPP session we had a lecture on the introduction of higher education and what is means to be on a new level course and what to expect. I found the lecture very interesting and helpful in my understanding of what to expect and what is expected of me. I also thought it was helpful in how it highlighted the ways in which we would learn during the 3 years that we are studying, not only in university but in the outside world.
My notes from the lecture.
What I want feedback on
My notes from the lecture.
- Education is a developmental process
- Formal, informal, nonformal learning all different parts of learning
- Formal: takes place in uni lectures/ tutors
- Informal: experience of day to day situations
- Nonformal: organised learning outside formal learning systems "personal study time"
- Feedback: essential part of education
- Formative: monitor day to day progress is the most valuable type of feedback
- Summative: summarizes the development of an individual student at a specified point in time, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses
- Action plan
- Progress surgery - tutorials - overview - work to fulfil criteria of assessment
- Peer or group feedback: Critique unique to art and design education
- Concept crit: gives you an opportunity to present initial ideas and thoughts
- Progress crit: gives you an opportunity to show the development of work
- Final crit: final opportunity to receive formative feedback - organised presentation
- Quality, quantity and format of good material in preparation for crits
- Weakness of feedback: might not understand, disinterest, personal attack, informulaic: not a lot of clear and strong points to work on
- Always ask questions!
What I want feedback on
After our lecture we were set into our blog groups and we all individually had to write what we wanted feedback on through our progress so far on the course and here's what I wanted to be addressed.
- My progress
- My skills
- My work ethic
- My design
- My academic writing
- My analysis
- My research
- The quality if my work how I present of my work how I present my work my communication and presenting
When we individually identified what we wanted feedback on we then expressed this to everyone in the group writing 1-2 from our lists onto an A3 sheet on paper.
We then had discuss ways in what need to be provided in order for our questions to be asked and came up with these solutions
What evidence needs to be there in order to give the feedback?
- See a body of on going work
- Up to date blog
- Example of essay methods
- Examples and feedback from tutors
- Crits and self evaluation
Then as a class we discussed which ones we all brain stormed and highlighted the most significant
- Blog - context , tagging, organisation, quantity, quality - text/images
- Time management on projects
- Academic/ writing skills
- Critical evaluation - myself and others
- Quality of work
- Design decisions
- Understanding of design / principles
- Individual progress / improvement
- Appropriateness of responses
After highlighting the most significant as a class we came to the conclusion that the blog was the most popular in what we wanted critique on, so when had to create 10 questions relevant to what we was concerned about in regards to our blogs.
10 Questions
- Is the context of the blog understandable?
- Are the thought process and development relevant and clear?
- Are the images sourced and taken of a good quality?
- Is my time management and what's produced good?
- Is the blog of a high standard and relevant?
- What is the quality of language and academic writing?
- Is there a good quality and quantity of context / design / research?
- Is there evidence of self evaluation on PPP?
- Is the layout clear and interesting?
- Is there a good quality of design practice?
From the 10 questions we then had to choose 5 from the list that we wanted to be analysed on by the member's of our blog group. We chose to focus on just what was presented on the PPP part of the blog. We then had to post these individually onto our blogs and accumulate and five feedback on what's right, what's wrong, what could be improved in a mature and academic way through suggestions and ways to improve. After this we would identify points for improvement and address the issues risen.
