For the partner typeface critique we were set into groups of 12 and had to individually present with our partner our designs, explaining our reasons for the design, how it represented our partner and the process in front of our peers and tutors.
Feedback
My partner Jasper, liked how I incorporated his characteristics into the design and how it reflected his personality. My peers and tutors also stated how they liked the detail in each letter form and the concept. However they suggested that I could work with one or two of the letter forms in the design instead of the whole alphabet. They also suggested that I should make the letter forms bigger so they could see the detail more clearly.
On reflection from the crit and the feedback I received I agreed with the suggestions they made. I had a lot of difficulty figuring out the sizing of the letter forms and the layout and I now know this is something I need to research and work on for future projects. I also would like to experiment with testing out some wide set shapes in the alphabet such as the letter 'W' so I can add more detail and definition and leaving smaller letters like 's' blank to see what the outcome of the complete typeface would look like.
I really enjoyed the process of making my typeface a researching into the genre of comic book art as it was something I have never come across before and learned to appreciate. However during the 2 weeks of making this typeface I was faced with various problems and had to make a lot of design decisions which changed my initial ideas of what I wanted the completed typeface to look like.
Initially I wanted to make the text 3D and instead of me researching 3D fonts I looked a 2D fonts that I wanted to experiment with. After practising with the outcomes I came to the decision it was too difficult and opted for the simpler option of keeping it 2D. As a designer I always think of elaborate ideas and I have learnt that I should consider what I can do in the time required and not to over complicate my idea's as that less can always be more. Although I over came such problems I now know that for future projects time management and organisation is something that I need to work on, if I spread my time out wisely I think I could have made a better design. I also know that I have a lot of research and learning to do when it comes to Illustrator and to overcome this I will ask all the doubts I have in my Illustrator tutorials.
