What makes me a designer?
We started the session by getting into our brief groups and then splitting into pairs. I was partners with Jamie and we had to discuss these images. We then identified the personal and professional images from the mixed up pile given to us by Jordan and Leo.
After sorting the images we had to create two 50 worded statements. One about their personal practice and another about their professional practice. This task was interesting as we had to interpret what we saw aside from what we knew.
(Leo Left - Jordan Right.)
LEO
Professional
- Likes black and white
- Minimalist design
- Tag's, logo's and events flyers which show an interest in branding
- Simplistic typography
Leo shows a taste for minimalist and modernist design. His images also show an interest for branding and logo design. His practice demonstrates interest for typography and layout. There is also a selection of gig's and events flyers which maybe an avenue he wants to go down as a designer.
Personal
- Shows a sense of unorganisation
- Likes cat's
- Interest in movies or the cinema
- Like's inspiration quotes
As an individual Leo presents himself as a fast learner. He also see's himself as organised He likes cats and likes old school classic movies.
JORDAN
Professional
- Inspired by Drew Millard
- Intricate illustrations
- Interesing typography
- Hand drawn and digital methods
Jordan's practice demonstrates an interest in music illustration and is particularly inspired by Drew Millward. His interests lie within editorial and publishing design that uses photography. He also has a taste for infographics and digital manipulation with typography. His practice both shows minimalism and well detailed illustration.
Personal
- Likes skateboarding
- In touch with nature
- Likes photography
- Favourite season is summer
- Likes graffiti
Jordan as an individual likes to skateboard and likes to supporting brands. He also has a laid back and chilled personality which is represented through the places he has been on holiday. He also shows an appreciation for street art which he also might do in his spare time.
We then read the statements to each person and asked them how accurately we portrayed them. The statements for Jordan were all correct. However, for Leo we misinterpreted the images of the cat which represented he was lazy.
Finally, Fred introduced us to associative communication.
When presenting ourself as designers, we should be able to come across as a product. Employers and people can understand something more clearly if they can associate it with something they know.
This then lead us to task 8.
