DESIGN MANCHESTER FESTIVAL: VISIT

As a part of my personal practice and my research, I have booked to go to the design Manchester festival. Design Manchester is an originative week-long festival, celebrating creativity, collaboration and inclusivity in the worlds of art, design, illustration, animation and photography.

Now in its second year the festival seeks to inspire and educate, working alongside key partners: the Manchester School of Art, as well as the Design Council, the RSA Faculty of Royal Designers and APDIG. Design Manchester is curated by a passionate team of creatives, with our Ambassador Malcolm Garrett RDI who will again host the main conference alongside David Crow, the Dean of the School of Art. Design Manchester will take place in some of the city’s most iconic venues, giving you an opportunity to engage in numerous events from lively debates to industry networking.

Out of all the days I have chosen to go to the core festival day which is detail below. One thing I wanted to achieve in my personal practice was to attend more industry professional talks as a source of influence and a way of gaining more contacts and networking.  Also I am really inspired by the speakers that are talking at this event, especially Peter Saville as he is known for his iconic designs for factory records and the hacienda which feeds into my interest for design for music.

Overview

Overall I have really enjoyed the talks today, seeing such a wide range of creatives from graphic design and other disciplines was really inspiring in seeing what they have achieved throughout their careers and concepts for their projects.

I felt that this visit really was beneficial in me seeing how designers can do a multitude of things throughout their practice, specifically Rejane Del Bello. Her presentation was really interesting seeing how she had travelled around the world and done projects to help people in different countries I felt this was something I could definitely aspire to as a designer.

One speaker that I wanted to see what Peter Saville however he turned up at the end for a Q&A instead of a presentation on his work. I tried to speak to him after the presentation but he was really busy speaking to other designers. Although I didn't get to speak to him, it was really nice to see someone that inspires you and I also have discovered other people to look up to from this talk.

I will also email Michael C Place, in regards to my dissertation as he has a lot of knowledge about designing for music which could possibly help my work!
